The Oscar Project
After multiple big releases hitting theaters last weekend, we only have one major release this week and it's a double sequel.
Check out my thoughts on Glass as well as other limited releases coming out this weekend.

Continuing my coverage of predictions, today I am tackling four categories including Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design. If you missed the previous prediction posts, please check out my Sound and Visual Predictions and Design, Cinematography, and Editing Predictions. I hope you enjoyed yesterday's prediction post focused on Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. Today I'm looking at the categories of Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. Unfortunately for me, none of these three categories have been shortlisted yet so there is a big batch of films to pull from, but some that have established themselves as front runners. Be sure to come back tomorrow for a look at four categories including Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design. The nominations for this year's Oscars closed yesterday and I wanted to push out a preview of who I think will receive nominations for all categories ahead of the actual announcement of nominations a week from today. I'm starting with the two sound categories (Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing) along with the Best Visual Effects category and will continue with 3-4 categories each day throughout the rest of this week. I'm trying to group things together with like categories as much as possible and will culminate with three separate posts next Monday focusing on the Best Acting categories, Best Director, and lastly, Best Picture. So without further ado, let's get into today's predictions. If you have a vote for any Oscar nominations, it's time to get your choices in. Today is the last day for submitting nomination votes. Next Tuesday, the nominations will be announced and we will be able to begin making predictions of who will win the awards a month later. Throughout the rest of this week, I am hoping to post a few predictions about who will receive nominations for the various categories. I will likely put several categories into each post since there are so many to cover and only a few days left before nominations are announced. Keep check back here daily for new predictions!
With only one wide release last week, this week's four wide release films seems like an absolute bonanza. That said, at least three of them appear to be worth seeing, depending on the mood you find yourself in.
Unfortunately, the same does not appear to be so for limited releases this week. There are definitely some films that fall into the category of bottom of the barrel films that the studios were holding onto until after the first of the year. Last night the Golden Globes were broadcast live on NBC and awards were dolled out in many categories that mirror those that will be decided on by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences next month. That said, I wanted to take a look at who received awards on the film side and see what that might mean for Oscar nominations which are due out on January 22nd (just over two weeks!) One important think to point out is that the voting for nominations for the Oscars started today so those final lists of nominees are starting to take shape as I write this. The initial voting ends next Monday, so the nominees will be decided within the week.
Happy New Year!
Welcome to the very first Nominee Watch of 2019. We have officially passed the point of no return for films to receive nominations for the Academy Awards that will be handed out in late February so we're starting a new crop of posts about films that just might receive nominations for NEXT YEAR'S awards. Unfortunately, there is not much to offer from an Oscar perspective this weekend. I suggest taking this opportunity to catch up on the potential Oscar nominees from 2018 you may have missed. You can see the current short lists for several categories along with viewing options for many of the films. |
