The Oscar Project
Merry Christmas everyone a few days early. Today I take a look at the films releasing on Christmas Day this week and see where I think Oscar nominations could come from in this last week of the year before the eligibility period ends. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday this week and I will be back after the new year with new Nominee Watch posts looking ahead to the films from 2020 before gearing up for the Oscar nominations on January 13th and the awards ceremony a few weeks after that.

This weekend's releases are of two different worlds. First you have three wide releases that will all do very well at the box office in Bombshell (technically an expanded release), Cats, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. On the other side, the list of limited releases below is populated by old foreign films and documentaries that are getting small re-releases. I'm sure none of the major studios wanted to compete with the power of Disney's latest blockbuster and offering some of these old art films could drive people to smaller theaters if they are not interested in the big new releases. As you'll read below, I think all three of the big releases this weekend will get at least a few nominations come Oscar time, but they will end up competing against one another in several categories so unfortunately they can't all win. Despite the fact that we are right in the middle of awards season, there are not really any big awards contenders being released this weekend. The Aeronauts is one of the finalists for the Best Visual Effects award, but I don't see that or the animated PLAYMOBILE: The Movie having any sort of legs. Even prediction sites like HSX.com have these two films very low at the box office. This may be the chance for anyone who hasn't gone already to check out Frozen II, Knives Out, or A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The Academy announced the list of films under consideration in the Best Visual Effects category yesterday. There are plenty that you would expect to see here including the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Avengers: Endgame, and Terminator: Dark Fate. There are a few surprises in the mix too. Click below to see the full list. It's time to let it go once more as Frozen II hits theaters this weekend. We are also getting the long awaited Mister Rogers film and a new police drama starring Chadwick Boseman. Be sure to also check out the limited releases for some documentaries that have been submitted for Oscar consideration and a few small releases with some big name stars. Awards season is really starting to heat up as we move through the middle of November. There are three films hitting wide release this weekend that have a good shot at some Oscar nominations. You'll also find several films getting their qualifying limited releases for nominations in Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best International Film this weekend. Check out all the details below. If you've been reading my posts here for a while, you know that around this time last year, I posted the full list of films that had been submitted for consideration for Best Documentary Feature. Well, the list is back for this year and while not quite as many film as last year, there are still 159 films up for consideration. Assuming you could get your hands on all 159 films, it would take you nearly 10 days of straight watching them around the clock to complete all of them. But, maybe you only want to watch movies eight hours a day, then it will take you almost a month to watch them all. Of course, you could always wait until December 16th when The Academy will be announcing the short list of 15 films considered for nomination in this category. Even that could take a full day of movie watching, assuming they are readily available. I am including the entire list in this post. If you want some additional information, you can always hop over to The Academy's official announcement of the list, but they won't give you links to trailers and availability information like you'll find below. With a spread of big opening films, I doubt that any one will take over the box office this weekend. There is a little something for everyone from horror, to historical drama, to rom-coms, and even a family comedy. The limited release list has a few gems in it as well, including Christmas stories from Netflix and Disney+ that you will be able to stream on those services later this month. |
