The Oscar Project
There are only four Oscar nominees joining Netflix this month, and only two of them actually won an award. The other bad news is that there are a bunch of Oscar nominees leaving the streaming service this month. Fortunately most are not until the end of the month, so you have a little time to still catch those before they leave.

So I called an audible this month with this post. Going through the list of Oscar nominated films coming to Netflix, it was rather sparse, including only four films. In order to boost the post a little bit, I am also including information on three films that are entered in the categories of Best Animated Feature or Best International Feature but may or may not make it to the short lists for those categories. There is also one film coming out this month which is pretty much a 100% shoe in for multiple nominations if not multiple wins come Oscar time. As I'm doing more of these monthly posts, I'm starting to see the trend of films coming onto Netflix for several months at a time before disappearing again. I was again able to find a list of the films leaving Netflix this month and many of them were part of my April post in the spring, meaning they were available for six months. The good news is you still have a week to check some of these out before they disappear, and rest assured, they will probably be back in the future at some point.
Last October I tried starting a series of posts previewing films scheduled for release in the following quarter that were based on books. As I'm sure you've noticed, things got busy with the site here as the Oscars ramped up in the first few months of the year, and I never revisited that type of post.
Now is the time to bring it back. Below is a list of films coming out in October through December this year that are based on books, or other printed material such as comics or newspaper/magazine articles. If you're like me, you like to read the source material before seeing the film so hopefully this gives you the chance to do that before the films release! The cool thing about these books is that they span the range of authors and genres. There is drama, horror, humor, kids, and even a classic thrown in the mix. The authors include Stephen King, T. S. Eliot, and Louisa May Alcott while the directors of these films include Martin Scorsese, Taika Waititi, Edward Norton, Steven Soderbergh, and Greta Gerwig. One important note, I have included links to Amazon where you can purchase the materials referenced and to WorldCat to search a local library near you. The Amazon links are affiliate links which means I get a small percentage of what you pay for them, but it doesn't change what you pay. Libraries are free, but you might have to pay a small hold fee if your library has a hold program. After a few full months of new Oscar winners and nominees coming to Netflix, August is sort of a dud. The good news is that even with some films that may be lower down on the pecking order in terms of greatest Oscar nominees ever, we do get the fantastic film Gangs of New York later in the month. It holds a rather dubious distinction but you'll have to check out the write-up below to find out what it is. I also decided to add something to this monthly post. With Netflix continuously bringing in new content, they have to get rid of some stuff that's been up there for a while. So I'm including a list of the Oscar nominees and winners that will be disappearing off of Netflix (at least for now) in the month of August. I'm not providing a full recap, just the nominations and wins but check that list out at the end of the post. It appears to be Martin Scorsese and Meryl Streep month with new films coming to Netflix. In addition to the films listed below, Scorsese's films Mean Streets and Who's That Knocking at My Door also join the streaming service. In keeping with films we've seen added in recent months, Disney has a pair of additions. Get them now before the disappear from Netflix in favor of Disney Plus in November. There is something here for every member of the family so read on to see which Oscar winners and nominees are coming to Netflix in July 2019. I initially thought this was going to be a slim month for Oscar winners and nominees coming to Netflix, but I found an updated list today and it has a much larger crop than the previous information I found. Among the new additions this month, the Best Picture winner from 2 years ago, Barry Jenkins's Moonlight, the now cyberpunk techno thriller classic The Matrix, and 1966's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, nominated for an astounding 13 Oscars. Check out the full list below and keep an eye here for direct links to the films on Netflix when they become available. |
