The Oscar Project
There is only one major film being released this weekend and if you don't know what it is, you've probably been living under a rock for the last several years. Comic book and super hero fans around the world have been anxiously awaiting the release of Avengers: Infinity War since it was first announced that Marvel Studios would be putting together an entire series of films based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is the big one that we've been waiting for, where it appears we get the combination of just about every character from Iron Man and Captain America, to Thor, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and even the Guardians of the Galaxy.

This week is a focus on comedy and horror, (it seems like there have been a bunch of horror flicks coming out in the past few weeks!) with a little dose of nature thrown in. That being said, I don't see a whole lot in terms of Oscar potential out of this week's releases.
I'm adding trailers to the list of films this week in case you are interested in checking any of them out. Let me know which of these four films you want to see in the comments below.
I was extremely excited to see "Garden Party" once I heard about it from the nominations. The trailer (which I included below) is absolutely stunning and had I not known that the film was animated, I likely would have assumed it was some sort of documentary about frogs living in pools and backyards.
After watching the film however, "Garden Party" is SO much more, and yes, the rest of the film looks just as good as the trailer!
I didn't realize until I was writing this post that it's going to be Friday the 13th tomorrow. I'm not superstitious, but perhaps I should be a bit more fearful with the four new releases this weekend. The one film expanding into wide release after spending a few weeks in limited release looks like the only Oscar contender in the bunch.
Following up on last Friday's post, I am writing this week about the films slated for wide release this weekend.
The docket this week includes the John Cena comedy Blockers, the historical drama Chappaquiddick about Ted Kennedy, The Miracle Season about high school volleyball, and the horror thriller A Quiet Place starring and directed by John Krasinski. Overall, I don't see many nominations coming out of this group of films, with the possible exception of Chappaquiddick.
This is a bit of a departure from the posts I've been putting up about current Oscar nominees, but I wanted to write about a film I've seen many times.
My family was looking for a movie to watch last night on Netflix and landed on the 1998 film Prince of Egypt starring Val Kilmer and Ralph Fiennes as Moses and Rameses in the story of the Hebrew exodus from Egypt. The Oscar Perspective In light of the general topic of this blog, I wanted to take a look at the film from the perspective of the Oscars. Looking up the historical data, I found that Prince of Egypt garnered two nominations (Best Original Song and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score) with the one win coming for the song "When You Believe." |
