The Oscar Project
While Star Wars is coming to Disney+ in full force, the larger set of Marvel Cinematic Universe films is not joining the platform wholesale. Only about a third of the MCU films released to date will be available on Disney+ when it releases in a few weeks. Of those, only two have been nominated for Oscars in the past. They are covered in this post.

It's been two months since we found out what happened to the Avengers crew in Endgame. While the film was "re-released" last weekend with some additional footage included, the best reason to go see it again arrives in theaters this week. Bumped up from it's original July 5th release date to July 2nd, Spider-Man: Far From Home picks up where Endgame left off. If you haven't seen Endgame, don't watch the trailer below since it contains major spoilers for that film. If you have seen it, you know that there is a major shift in the power dynamic following that film, and based on the trailer, Spider-Man is going to be asked to step up and fill the void. It's finally here, the end of the MCU's Infinity Saga that started 11 years ago with the first Iron Man film. Undoubtedly, Avengers: Endgame will be the one film that just about anyone going to the movies this weekend is planning on seeing. There are other films coming out this weekend that you may want to check out, especially if Endgame is sold out when you get to the theater. For anyone who has been keeping track of films in the past year, you know about the phenomenon that is Avengers: Infinity War and the anticipation that has come along with the pending release of the final film in this chapter of the MCU, Avengers: Endgame. While I'm not quite ready to give my nominee watch rundown of this film yet, I am taking this month to re-watch all 21 films in the MCU leading up to Endgame. In conjunction with this mini-project, I will be writing reviews for the website for each film, culminating with a review of Endgame itself at the end of the month. The review for the first film (Iron Man) is already posted and I have provided a full list in the post below which I will update with links to each review as I post them. If you have to catch up on any of the films, head to your local library and borrow them while you have a chance or check them out on the digital streaming service of your choice. I have included links below to watch the films on Netflix if they are currently available there as well as purchase links to Amazon for the physical copies. Note: the Amazon links are affiliate links which means using them will help support this site but won't cost you any more if you choose to buy. This is the first of several mid-week release announcements you'll be seeing here in the month of December. Mary Poppins Returns joins the list next week followed by Holmes & Watson and Vice on Christmas Day. For now, we have a very special announcement from the man in the red suit. Read on to find out what he has to say.
1. Blade Runner 2049 I waited quite some time to finally see this film, much longer than I originally wanted to since I love the original Blade Runner by Ridley Scott. I was not disappointed by this sequel and can fully understand why it won the award for Best Visual Effects. The main thing that I noticed when watching this film was that the visual effects served to drive the story forward when they were employed and at no time did I say to myself, "that effect felt out of place." Yes, there were times when the effects were obvious, but plenty of others where it was hard to determine if the effects were digital, practical, or some combination of the two. Overall, the visuals in this film are stunning and align extremely well with the visuals of the original. The use of light and shadow throughout the film lend an otherworldly feel to the future earth portrayed in the film. It also provides a sense of motion and unsteadiness, even when characters and camera are perfectly still. I rate this a strong 9+/10 for the film as a whole and agree with the Academy in selecting this for Best Visual Effects of 2017.
After last week's Mother's Day theme, I don't see any major themes in the works with this weekend's wide releases. We have three new films this week, Book Club starring Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda, the next superhero (or antihero) film in Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool 2, and Show Dogs with Will Arnett, Alan Cumming, and Stanley Tucci.
There is only one major film being released this weekend and if you don't know what it is, you've probably been living under a rock for the last several years. Comic book and super hero fans around the world have been anxiously awaiting the release of Avengers: Infinity War since it was first announced that Marvel Studios would be putting together an entire series of films based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is the big one that we've been waiting for, where it appears we get the combination of just about every character from Iron Man and Captain America, to Thor, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and even the Guardians of the Galaxy. |
