The Oscar Project
Merry Christmas everyone a few days early. Today I take a look at the films releasing on Christmas Day this week and see where I think Oscar nominations could come from in this last week of the year before the eligibility period ends. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday this week and I will be back after the new year with new Nominee Watch posts looking ahead to the films from 2020 before gearing up for the Oscar nominations on January 13th and the awards ceremony a few weeks after that.

This weekend's releases are of two different worlds. First you have three wide releases that will all do very well at the box office in Bombshell (technically an expanded release), Cats, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. On the other side, the list of limited releases below is populated by old foreign films and documentaries that are getting small re-releases. I'm sure none of the major studios wanted to compete with the power of Disney's latest blockbuster and offering some of these old art films could drive people to smaller theaters if they are not interested in the big new releases. As you'll read below, I think all three of the big releases this weekend will get at least a few nominations come Oscar time, but they will end up competing against one another in several categories so unfortunately they can't all win. On Monday this week the Academy announced short lists of potential nominees for nine different categories including Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, and Visual Effects.
In case you missed them, please check out my previous posts about the initial lists for Documentary Feature, International Feature Film, and Visual Effects. I have also included the short lists below. The original information is available from Oscars.org. The links on the names of the films themselves are links to trailers, usually on YouTube. If there are places where you can view the film in its entirety, I have included a separate link with the name of the source, i.e. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vimeo, etc. I did a post about movies based on books yesterday, so today it is the remakes and sequels post. Just to remind you what we're looking at here, this is a list of the films scheduled for release in Winter 2020 that fall into one of the following categories:

We are entering into the final stretch of the Oscar release season and Christmas will be upon us in just two short weeks, so what better time to see what books you need to read before seeing the new crop of films scheduled to hit theaters in the first quarter of next year. Maybe someone who loves you will get these books for you as a Christmas present!
As before, this is the list of films coming out in January through March of next year that are based on books or other printed material such as comics or newspaper/magazine articles. Most of the films this time around are based on books, but we do have two comic adaptations in the mix. For these films, the span of authors and genres is wide, as it was this fall. There are a few classics by authors including Hugh Lofting, Henry James, Jack London, and Jane Austen. Several films bring big stars back to the screen including Robert Downey Jr., Margot Robbie, and Harrison Ford. I have included links to Amazon where you can purchase the materials referenced along with links to WorldCat which allows you to search a local library near you. The Amazon links are affiliate links which means I get a small percentage of what you pay for them, but it doesn't change what you pay. Libraries are free, but you might have to pay a small hold fee if your library has a hold program. The links on the film titles themselves are for trailers where available. Despite the fact that we are right in the middle of awards season, there are not really any big awards contenders being released this weekend. The Aeronauts is one of the finalists for the Best Visual Effects award, but I don't see that or the animated PLAYMOBILE: The Movie having any sort of legs. Even prediction sites like HSX.com have these two films very low at the box office. This may be the chance for anyone who hasn't gone already to check out Frozen II, Knives Out, or A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The Academy announced the list of films under consideration in the Best Visual Effects category yesterday. There are plenty that you would expect to see here including the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Avengers: Endgame, and Terminator: Dark Fate. There are a few surprises in the mix too. Click below to see the full list. |
