The Oscar Project
The nominations for this year's Oscars closed yesterday and I wanted to push out a preview of who I think will receive nominations for all categories ahead of the actual announcement of nominations a week from today. I'm starting with the two sound categories (Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing) along with the Best Visual Effects category and will continue with 3-4 categories each day throughout the rest of this week. I'm trying to group things together with like categories as much as possible and will culminate with three separate posts next Monday focusing on the Best Acting categories, Best Director, and lastly, Best Picture. So without further ado, let's get into today's predictions. Best Sound EditingFront Runners: First Man - While this film hasn't made a big splash on the award circuit so far, I have a feeling this is where we will see solid nominations along with strong chances to win awards. A Quiet Place - The film just won a Critic's Choice award over the weekend for Best Sci-Fi or Horror Movie ad while there haven't been any sound categories at the other awards shows so far, the intense lack of sound in much of this film is sure to cement its place in both sound categories. Solo: A Star Wars Story - Nearly every entry in the Star Wars universe has received a nomination in this category since it became a regular staple of the awards in the early 1980s. A Star is Born - It's a musical film about musicians, it's going to get nominated for a sound award. Mary Poppins Returns - It's a musical film based on a classic film that probably would have won this category if it had been around at the time. I doubt it will win as there are plenty of other strong sound films, but I expect it to narrowly receive a nomination. First one out: Avengers: Infinity War - I think there are plenty of stronger contenders in this category for the year. Best Sound MixingFront Runners: A Quiet Place - The mixing category might be the better opportunity for this film to win a sound award but it is sure to at least receive a nomination. First Man - I wouldn't be surprised to see First Man split these two categories with another film, perhaps A Quiet Place. Solo: A Star Wars Story - Star Wars films have an even better track record here than in Sound Editing (2 wins and 5 more nominations over 9 films) so it's a safe bet that they'll find their way into this category again this year. A Star is Born - Of the two musical films (with Bohemian Rhapsody) much has been made of this being a better overall film and thus more likely to receive the nomination here. Mission Impossible - Fallout - Probably the one category where we see a nomination for the latest Tom Cruise film. Don't expect a win, but a nomination is a strong possibility. First one out: Avengers: Infinity War - Again, I think sound is not the specific area we will see Avengers land a nomination, but keep reading. Best Visual EffectsThis is a little easier to pick since there was a short list announced last month. Just to recap, the short list of films included: Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Christopher Robin, First Man, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mary Poppins Returns, Ready Player One, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Welcome to Marwen. So who get's the nominations? Here's the list. Front Runners: Avengers: Infinity War - Unfortunately for Marvel fans out there, I have a feeling this may be the only nomination the superhero crowd receives this Oscar season. Solo: A Star Wars Story - Every Star Wars film (except Episode III - Revenge of the Sith) has been nominated for Best Visual Effects and I don't see the trend stopping this time around. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - It's time for the dinos to make an appearance at the Oscars once again. This is the year that the Jurassic team gets another Visual Effects nomination. Ready Player One - Spielberg's latest sci-fi romp probably won't show up elsewhere at the Oscar ceremony, so let's at least get it in for visual effects. Welcome to Marwen - It did not receive favorable reviews last month when it hit theaters, but I have a feeling Marwen will sneak into the Oscars with a nomination in this category. First one out: First Man - In what may be a surprise, I get the feeling the Neil Armstrong biopic will get snubbed from the Visual Effects race.
