The Oscar Project
I hope you enjoyed yesterday's prediction post focused on Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. Today I'm looking at the categories of Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. Unfortunately for me, none of these three categories have been shortlisted yet so there is a big batch of films to pull from, but some that have established themselves as front runners. Be sure to come back tomorrow for a look at four categories including Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design. Best Production DesignFront Runners: The Favourite - I think this film is, well...the favo(u)rite in this category. It's a period piece and is getting plenty of favorable reviews along with awards buzz for all three actresses along with a number of other categories. First Man - You can't go wrong with space films when it comes to production design. There are so many details to get right, and by in large, First Man delivered. Black Panther - If you've seen Wakanda, you know it's beautiful. The scenery pops off the screen and the overall look and feel of the film is very strong. Mary Poppins Returns - It's a fantasy world for sure, but one that hearkens back to the original in many ways. Roma - Cuaron's film is being touted as a masterpiece and I think will give any of the other films a run for their money in this category. First one out: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - While the beasts might be fantastic, I fear that the fact this is a sequel may detract from it receiving a nomination in the category. Best CinematographyFront Runners: Roma - This film has already taken home Best Picture honors at the Critics Choice Awards along with Best Director and Best Cinematography. I think this makes it the top choice for the Oscar in this category. The Favourite - Again, period piece, interesting settings, look for a strong nomination here. If Beale Street Could Talk - I hate to parrot the nominees at the Critics Choice Awards last weekend, but this one is standing out for cinematography as well. A Star is Born - I think Bradley Cooper's directorial debut will be a contender in the Cinematography field as well. Mary Poppins Returns - This one has a strong showing and I think it could make a run for the prize. First one out: At Eternity's Gate - A film that many people likely haven't heard about, I feel that the Vincent van Gogh biopic will just miss the cut. Best Film EditingFront Runners: First Man - While it may not show up on the big lists (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress) next week, I think First Man is a strong contender for Best Film Editing, especially after taking home the Critics Choice Award for that same category. Roma - This is also a front runner as it looks to clean up in many categories at the Oscars, Best Film Editing included. Green Book - It received the Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy Film and I think it will stand a chance of getting some additional nominations here, though likely not a win. A Star is Born - I debated this or The Favourite as the additional entry in the category but ultimately think A Star is Born will get the nom. Vice - Adam McKay and company delivered a strong film that is getting recognition. In addition to several of the top prizes, I expect an Editing nomination for Vice. First one out: BlacKkKlansman - In the first appearance of the latest Spike Lee joint on my predictions, I ultimately feel it will miss the cut for Best Film Editing.
