The Oscar Project
This is the second monthly post with a list of Oscar nominees and winners that will be making their way to Netflix in the coming month. I will update the post with links throughout the month as the movies become available on the streaming service. This month we have a few oldies from the 70s and 80s as well as a few more recent films that have won awards in the last decade. Check out the films below and don't forget to check out the March 2019 post for the films that arrived last month, all of which you can watch right now. April 1
All the President’s Men - The 1976 classic starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the journalists who investigated the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration. The film was nominated for eight Oscars and won for Best Art Direction (George Jenkins & George Gaines), Best Adapted Screenplay (William Goldman) Best Sound (Arthur Piantadosi, Les Fresholtz, Dick Alexander, and James E. Webb), and Best Supporting Actor (Jason Robards). Bonnie and Clyde - Ever wonder why Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty showed up to present the Best Picture Oscar two years ago that led to the biggest mistake in Oscars history? It happened to be the 50th anniversary of the classic film Bonnie and Clyde, starring Beatty and Dunaway as the title characters. The film tells to story of the partners and their crime spree during the Great Depression. Definitely watch this before checking out Netflix's new film The Highwaymen (Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson) which tells the story from the side of the law. The original film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won the awards for Best Supporting Actress (Estelle Parsons) and Best Cinematography (Burnett Guffey). Deliverance - John Boorman's 1972 film based on the novel of the same name about four men canoeing down a river in the Georgia wilderness. Starring Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox, the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Boorman), and Best Film Editing (Tom Priestley) but failed to take home any awards. Sherlock Holmes - The modern retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's master sleuth by Guy Ritchie starred Robret Downey Jr. and Jude Law as the lead characters. While the film didn't win any Oscars, it was nominated for Best Art Direction (Sarah Greenwood & Katie Spencer) and Best Original Score (Hans Zimmer). The Golden Compass - Adapted from the novel Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, this film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects (Michael L. Fink, Bill Westenhofer, Ben Morris, and Trevor Wood). Editor's Note: The 1981 film Arthur has been removed from this listing as the actual film that was added to Netflix was the 2011 remake by the same name which was not nominated for any Oscars. April 25 The Hateful Eight: Extended Version - Quentin Tarantino's 2015 western starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh was nominated for three Oscars. Ennio Morricone won the award for Best Original Score while Leigh was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Robert Richardson was nominated for Best Cinematography. April 29 The Imitation Game - Benedict Cumberbatch stars mathematician Alan Turing in the story of his efforts to break the German Enigma code, initially thought to be unbreakable by British Intelligence. The film received eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Morten Tyldum), Best Actor (Cumberbatch), and Best Supporting Actress (Keira Knightley), but only took home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay (Graham Moore).
