I'm trying a new type of post here this month similar to what some sites publish with the new content that will be available on Netflix in the coming month. Since this site is focused on the Oscars, I'm posting this list below and films coming to Netflix in March that were nominated for or won an Oscar in the past. I have included direct links to watch the films on the streaming service. Just log in and start watching today! While I haven't seen all of these films, there are definitely some gems in this crops of films. many of which are already streaming as of the first of the month. A Clockwork Orange - The Stanley Kubrick film interpretation of the classic Anthony Burgess novel of the same name. It was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1972 including Best Picture, Best Director (Kubrick), Best Adapted Screenplay (Kubrick), and Best Editing (Bill Butler). Apollo 13 - Ron Howard's excellent film about the famous "Houston, we have a problem." mission to the moon starring Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon as the trio of astronauts. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards in 1996, winning for Best Film Editing (Mike Hill and Daniel Hanley) and Best Sound (Rick Dior, Steve Pederson, Scott Millan, and David MacMillan) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - The masterpiece by Ang Lee that was nominated in ten categories at the 72rd Academy Awards in 2001, winning for Best Foreign Language Film (Ang Lee), Best Art Direction (Timmy Yip), Best Original Score (Tan Dun), and Best Cinematography (Peter Pau). Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks - Thomas Newman received a nomination for Best Original Score for his work on this film starring Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks about the development of the Disney classic Mary Poppins. Emma - Period drama based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name starring Gwyneth Paltrow. It was nominated for Best Costume Design and won for Best Original Score (Rachel Portman) Junebug - Amy Adams received a Best Supporting Actress nomination in 2006 for her work in this film about an art dealer pursuing a painter to use in her gallery. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - The Johnny Depp adaptation of the Broadway hit by Stephen Sondheim was nominated for three Academy Wards including Best Actor (Depp), Best Costume Design (Colleen Atwood), and Best Art Direction (Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo), winning for Best Art Direction. The Hurt Locker - The war film about the psychological effects of deal with explosive ordinance disposal during the war in Iraq was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning six including Best Picture, Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow), and Best Original Screenplay (Mark Boal). Winter’s Bone - The Jennifer Lawrence film about a young teen struggling to protect her family in rural Missouri was nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress (Lawrence), and Best Supporting Actor (John Hawkes) but failed to receive any awards. March 5 Disney’s Christopher Robin - The most recent nominee (Best Visual Effects-2019) hitting Netflix stars Ewan McGregor as the title character, all grown up and returning to the 100 Acre Wood to reclaim his childhood and reconnect with his family. March 7 Doubt - Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis were all nominated for acting awards by the Academy for their work in this 2008 film about a Catholic priest under scrutiny for his personal attention to the only black student at the school connected to his church. The film was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay but failed to win any of the awards for which it was nominated. I don't have a review up of this film, but it is definitely worth a watch. March 8 Blue Jasmine - Cate Blanchett stars in this film about a high class woman who falls on hard times and is forced to live with her working class sister. Blanchett won the Best Actress award in 2014 with Sally Hawkins receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Woody Allen for Best Original Screenplay. March 15 A Separation - A 2011 Iranian drama that was won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay. The Lives of Others - A 2006 German film that won the award for Best Foreign Language Film.
