The Oscar Project
I have to say, these have become some of my favorite categories the more attention I've paid to the Oscars over the last few years. They are so often over looked, but often provide some incredible films contained in very small packages. Today I am predicting the nominees for Best Animated Short Film, Best Documentary Short Film, and Best Live Action Short Film. Please go back and check the previous posts I've done earlier in the week and look for the last few posts coming tomorrow and Monday before the announcement of the nominees on Tuesday morning! Best Animated Short FilmFront Runners: One Small Step - I was fortunate enough to come across this film through a weekly email from the website shortoftheweek.com. If you haven't been to the site, I urge you to check it out as there are often some tremendous films you can view, many of them for free. As far as this film, the story is touching, with a wonderfully endearing female lead and beautifully animated. Bao - You may have seen Pixar's latest entry into the Animated Short Film category if you went to see Incredibles 2 at the theater. It's an adorable little film, but honestly not the strongest among those that Pixar has released in recent years. Lost & Found - I watched this with my kids and it almost had them in tears. If you have children who have a favorite toy, this one will tug at your heart strings, along with other strings. Age of Sail - I've only watched part of this film, but it is beautifully animated throughout. Pepe la Morse - While the animation is a bit rougher than some of the other short listed films, I think this one will hit home with anyone who has lost a relative AND has a crazy family. First one out: Bird Karma - I haven't seen any of the other films yet (still trying to find them online) but someone has to be the first one out. Best Documentary Short FilmFront Runners: End Game - What is it with Netflix and these short docs about end of life care in the hospitals? This one could just nab them another nomination. Zion - While it's not at the same level as the sports doc Icarus that won Netflix a Best Documentary Feature award last year, "Zion" is a strong short film with a strong message. Black Sheep - Amazon is getting into the game here as well with one of their short docs, hoping to take home the prize this year. Lifeboat - What better way to spur on the action in a doc than to have it contained at sea? Period. End of Sentence - Continuing the empowerment of women, this film looks to get a nomination this year. First one out: Women of the Gulag - I don't think both women focused films will make the cut, so I fear this one may be left out. Best Live Action ShortFront Runners: Fauve - If you haven't seen this film yet, go watch it now. I dare you to watch to the end and not get emotional. It's an incredibly simple story, but one that can hit you on a deeply emotional level. Caroline - I haven't gotten to see this one yet, but have heard several good things about it. Detainment - We've heard lots about detaining children at the southern border of our country recently, but this goes in a different direction and based on a true story. Skin - Something else pertinent to our time, this film examines how perceptions of race can quickly spiral out of control. May Day - Desperate job seekers encounter a very odd interview. First one out: Marguerite - Again, I haven't seen some of these films, so I'm taking a bit of a shot in the dark and one of them needs to fall out of the top five.
