It's time to let it go once more as Frozen II hits theaters this weekend. We are also getting the long awaited Mister Rogers film and a new police drama starring Chadwick Boseman. Be sure to also check out the limited releases for some documentaries that have been submitted for Oscar consideration and a few small releases with some big name stars. Awards season is really starting to heat up as we move through the middle of November. There are three films hitting wide release this weekend that have a good shot at some Oscar nominations. You'll also find several films getting their qualifying limited releases for nominations in Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best International Film this weekend. Check out all the details below. With a spread of big opening films, I doubt that any one will take over the box office this weekend. There is a little something for everyone from horror, to historical drama, to rom-coms, and even a family comedy. The limited release list has a few gems in it as well, including Christmas stories from Netflix and Disney+ that you will be able to stream on those services later this month. Our two wide releases this week are both sequels to very popular and successful films, both with some connection to Halloween. First up is Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to 2014's Maleficent. Then we have Zombieland: Double Tap, the follow up to 2009's Zombieland and a direct reference to one of Columbus's famous rules from the first film. Check out these films this weekend and see where I see potential for Oscar nominations. This week marks the firsts big batch of Halloween horror films hitting theaters. Most are falling into the limited release category and I wouldn't expect them to do much business, but who knows when you'll find a diamond in the rough. We also get a Will Smith action piece and a comedy with a lead role for Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect). Click through for the full list of films releasing this weekend. Despite the fact that it technically falls (somewhere) in the super hero genre, you might be surprised at the Oscar potential I see in this week's big wide release opener. Also check out the limited releases for some horror fun as we step into the month of Halloween. I trust there will be more as we get closer to the end of the month, but there are a few here to whet your whistle if you're a horror fan. With only one major wide release coming this weekend, it may be up to the limited releases to find anything nominated for an Oscar. There are a few foreign language films in the mix and at least once documentary that could find their names into the Oscar nominations this winter, but other than that, it will be slim pickings for at least another week. |
