While Star Wars is coming to Disney+ in full force, the larger set of Marvel Cinematic Universe films is not joining the platform wholesale. Only about a third of the MCU films released to date will be available on Disney+ when it releases in a few weeks. Of those, only two have been nominated for Oscars in the past. They are covered in this post. If you've missed the last few posts about the Oscar nominated films coming to Disney+ next month, I urge you to check them out. So far I've covered live action films, animated films, and Pixar films. My last two posts after this one will cover Marvel films and the one Oscar nominated documentary that will be available on the service. The nominations for this year's Oscars closed yesterday and I wanted to push out a preview of who I think will receive nominations for all categories ahead of the actual announcement of nominations a week from today. I'm starting with the two sound categories (Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing) along with the Best Visual Effects category and will continue with 3-4 categories each day throughout the rest of this week. I'm trying to group things together with like categories as much as possible and will culminate with three separate posts next Monday focusing on the Best Acting categories, Best Director, and lastly, Best Picture. So without further ado, let's get into today's predictions. The Academy announced yesterday the list of 20 films being considered for the award for Best Visual Effects this year. There are some extremely strong contenders here already, and the best news is that the majority of these films are already available on disc or streaming services. You can probably check your local library or RedBox for very affordable viewing options. From this full list of 20 films, the Academy will narrow it to a shortlist of ten films for final consideration before being narrowed further to five final nominees. 1. Blade Runner 2049 I waited quite some time to finally see this film, much longer than I originally wanted to since I love the original Blade Runner by Ridley Scott. I was not disappointed by this sequel and can fully understand why it won the award for Best Visual Effects. The main thing that I noticed when watching this film was that the visual effects served to drive the story forward when they were employed and at no time did I say to myself, "that effect felt out of place." Yes, there were times when the effects were obvious, but plenty of others where it was hard to determine if the effects were digital, practical, or some combination of the two. Overall, the visuals in this film are stunning and align extremely well with the visuals of the original. The use of light and shadow throughout the film lend an otherworldly feel to the future earth portrayed in the film. It also provides a sense of motion and unsteadiness, even when characters and camera are perfectly still. I rate this a strong 9+/10 for the film as a whole and agree with the Academy in selecting this for Best Visual Effects of 2017. |
