The Oscar Project
As if things couldn't get any busier this November, we head into this weekend with at least two films sure to secure Oscar nominations getting wide release.
Along with the wide releases, the list of limited release films grows each week I update my listings as many other films seek to get an official release in Los Angeles in order to become eligible for Academy Awards. If you're trying to keep up with all these new films, it's going to get increasingly difficult over the next month and a half so strap in and get ready!

I posted last week with the list of animated feature films that have been submitted to The Academy for consideration in that category this year. Yesterday The Academy announced the list of 166(!) films that have been submitted for the Documentary Feature category. Now, you could go around and try to watch all 166 of these films, which assuming they average about 90 minutes each, would take well over 10 days of straight viewing to complete. Alternately, you could wait until December 17th when The Academy will be announcing the short list of 15 films considered for nomination in this category. Even that could take a full day of movie watching, assuming they are readily available. I am including the entire list in this post. If you want some additional information, you can always hop over to The Academy's official announcement of the list, but they won't give you links to trailers and availability information like you'll find below. Enjoy!
This week we have a slew of animated features hitting theaters, some from the list of potential nominees I posted last week. The main attraction will of course be Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, but also keep an eye out for Ruben Brandt, Collector if it hits a theater near you.
Check out the post for the rest of the list of films hitting theaters this weekend.
We fly into November with several new offerings, some of which will surely be up for Oscar consideration come winter time.
We have two very different types of films based on music (Bohemian Rhapsody and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms) as well as a buddy/relationship comedy (Nobody's Fool) and a fantasy horror mystery expanding into wide release (Suspiria). On the limited release front, there are a few documentaries that might make some hay at the Oscars along with some films that will surely see wider release in a few weeks. We are about three months away from the announcement of official nominations for the 91st Academy Awards and four months from the award ceremony in February, but last week, the Academy announced the list of films that have been submitted for consideration in the Best Animated Feature category. The good news is that many of these films are already available on DVD, Blu Ray and digital streaming services with several more scheduled to be released in the near future. You can see the full list below and look for a few of these films still to hit theaters in the coming weeks. Also check out the Academy's official announcement on their website.
Just a few weeks before the actual holiday, the long awaited sequel arrives in theaters this weekend with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role in the original Halloween film from 1978.
And if slasher films aren't your style, I highly recommend checking out The Hate U Give which expands to a wide release this weekend. It is sure to get buzz throughout award season due to the present nature of the subject matter. With about three and a half months remaining until the announcements of the Oscar Nominees for this year, the Academy last week released the list of 87 films that have been submitted for consideration in the Best Foreign Language Film category. You can view their full article but I have included the list below as well with links to as many trailers I could find available online at this time. If you find any I missed, please let me know and I will add them to the post. Additionally, a few of the selections have already been previewed on this site. In those cases, I have included a link to the original preview post where appropriate.
We made it into the fall film season and it's time to get ready for some big films coming out in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, the first batch is not the best so if you're strapped for cash to spend on movies, you may still want to wait a few weeks.
Curiously, there is a large group of French language films from various corners of the globe hitting theaters this weekend. I'm not sure if there is something in the French water, but it jumped out at me as I was reviewing the trailers for this post. Now that we've passed Labor Day and it's back to school time for just about everyone, I thought it would be a good time to look ahead to the awarding of the Oscars in 2019 for films released this year. The first thing to look at is the key dates related to the nominations, voting, and when the awards are actually handed out. November 18, 2018 The first key date is for the Governors Awards this November. If you watch the Oscars broadcast each year, you've seen some highlights of this event during the telecast. Awards handed out at this event include the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (most recently given to Francis Ford Coppola in 2010), the Jean Hersholt Humanitarin Award (Debbie Reynolds in 2015) and the Honorary Award (Angès Varda, Charles Burnett, Donald Sutherland, and Owen Roizman in 2017) |
