The Oscar Project
We've reached the end of the line for nomination predictions. In less than 24 hours, we will know who the nominees are (and how close I came to getting them right). I have two more posts coming today, Best Director and Best Picture so look for those later in the day. And while you're here, check out all the prediction posts I've done so far. Best ActressFront Runners: Glenn Close (The Wife) - With multiple award season wins already, Close looks like the top prospect for taking home the Best Actress award for the first time in her career. Olivia Colman (The Favourite) - She already has one win this award season for her role in this film, and looks to land at least one more nomination before all is said and done. Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) - With her first starring role in a motion picture, it's already time for her to receive her first leading role nomination. Viola Davis (Widows) - Despite the fact that she's been skipped over at many of the awards ceremonies this year, I expect Davis to receive a nomination from the Academy. Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) - McCarthy's departure from the comedic roles is likely to land her a nomination from the Academy, but doubt that she will walk away with the win. First one out: Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) - Blunt could have been nominated for Poppins or A Quiet Place this year but I fear she will be left out of the nominations on both fronts. Best ActorFront Runners: Christian Bale (Vice) - It almost goes without saying that Bale is the top contender for the Best Actor award this year, having taken home the Golden Globe and two Critic's Choice Awards for the same category. Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) - Malek's transformation into Queen frontman Freddie Mercury was almost as stunning as Bale becoming Dick Cheney, but just a little short of winning the Oscar this year. Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) - I really like Mortensen and very much want him to win this award, but I fear he will need to wait at least one more year in this crowded field. Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) - Not only did he pull of a great directorial debut, but his role shined through in all its drunken glory. John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) - Taking on the Klan as a black man had to be tough, being taken seriously as the son of an Oscar winning actor maybe even tougher. First one out: Ethan Hawke (First Reformed) - He's been nominated twice as an actor and twice as a writer, this year could be his chance to be nominated for both, but I feel he falls just short.
