The Oscar Project
I hate to drive people to a source for Oscar information other than this blog, but with the arrival of The Academy on the writing platform Medium, I have to at least share the information. I say arrival, but that's not a fair statement since The Academy has been posting on Medium for over a year. I hadn't been clued into their writing on the platform, but have added them to my list of "Follows" after reading a pair of articles on this morning. At the Academy: JOKER gives a wonderful background about how the world of that film was crafted and how the creators decided on how the world should look along with how the Joker himself should move throughout that world. There is even an interesting bit about the score for the film that I haven't heard of before. In At the Academy: THE IRISHMAN, there are quotes from Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese about how they came back together after many years of not working together. It seems it was a film that was destined to be made, it was just a matter of time. Rest assured, I will be keeping tabs on this page for more movie news and background about upcoming films and share those musings here as they relate to things I'm discussing.

This week marks the firsts big batch of Halloween horror films hitting theaters. Most are falling into the limited release category and I wouldn't expect them to do much business, but who knows when you'll find a diamond in the rough. We also get a Will Smith action piece and a comedy with a lead role for Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect). Click through for the full list of films releasing this weekend. Despite the fact that it technically falls (somewhere) in the super hero genre, you might be surprised at the Oscar potential I see in this week's big wide release opener. Also check out the limited releases for some horror fun as we step into the month of Halloween. I trust there will be more as we get closer to the end of the month, but there are a few here to whet your whistle if you're a horror fan. It's time for the lists of films submitted for various categories to begin coming out from the Academy and today we start with the list of films submitted for Best International Feature Film. Folks familiar with the category names may recognize that this is a new category. Well, not really new, but it's under a new name. The Academy changed the name of the Best Foreign Language Film to reflect their position that the word "foreign" was outdated. Updated 10/7/19 with the full list of films. The full article is also available on the Academy Website. |
