The Oscar Project
The Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards are past and the voting for the Oscars is ongoing this week. This Sunday will see the Grammys awarded for music before we get into the final stretch of awards for film. Here's a look at the key dates you need to know as we lead up to the big (virtual) Academy Awards on April 25th.

The votes for round one are in and for the most part the higher seeded films made it through. Onward was a minor upset over A Bug's Life, but possibly a result of recency bias since one came out a year ago (this weekend actually) and the other came out nearly 23 years ago. (Yes, A Bug's Life is old enough to vote, drink, and fight for our country)
The bigger surprise was in the match-up of the 21st seeded Cars against 12th seeded WALL-E. My surprise was not that Cars won however, but that it was rated so low to begin with. The three Cars movies were actually the lowest three rated films on the list, and while I agree they're not up to the level of Up, Inside Out, or most of the Toy Story films, I didn't think they were that bad. But then, when everything coming from Pixar is a blockbuster hit, even the least among them are strong compared to the rest of the animated world. So with the votes tallied for round 1, it's time to move on to round 2. If you already voted for round 1, please make sure you vote for round 2 and keep your favorite alive. If some of the films you voted for didn't make it through, there are plenty of stellar animated masterpieces left in the competition to keep you happy.
It is officially March Madness time and while the basketball tournament doesn't start for a few weeks, I decided to set up a fun little tournament of my own. We're looking at all the Pixar animated feature films made since the release of Toy Story in 1995, up to the most recent release of Soul this past Christmas.
The competition will run throughout the month of March with each round staying open for a few days. Be sure to check back often to vote and view the results of the previous round. |
