The Oscar Project
It's a sequel weekend, kind of, with one very obvious sequel and one that's a little less obvious.
While you're here, check out the new section I've added to the website where I am starting to post full length film reviews. The first film up is the Oscar nominated film RBG.
Cold Pursuit
You may have heard about the recently canceled premier for this film due to racially charged comments made by star Liam Neeson, but that is not stopping it from hitting theaters this weekend. Fortunately for the film, Neeson remains a bankable star and this film, while not a direct sequel to his popular Taken series, still looks somewhat like a distant cousin to those films. Neeson plays Nels Coxman, plower of roads in a remote northern town and citizen of the year. When his son shows up dead of an apparent drug overdose, he seeks out the drug gang that his son was involved with and vows revenge for what happened to his son. Again, he seems to have a very specific set of skills that make him fit for this role, although this time he attributes his them to having read them "in a crime novel."
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part
As you can see from the trailer below, everything is NOT awesome in Bricksburg in this sequel to 2014's The LEGO Movie. This film brings back all your favorites from the first film including Emmet (Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks), and Batman (Will Arnett) and introduces new foes in General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz) and Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi (Tiffany Haddish). (I see what they did there with that name...) In what looks like a Mad Max inspired apocalypse, Emmet remains the happy-go-lucky construction worker from the original film and the fact that he saved the world has obviously NOT gone to his head. But then Lucy is kidnapped and taken to the Sistar System (I see what you did there again) ruled by Queen Wa'Nabi, he has to go on another quest to save her.
The Prodigy
It's time for the next horror film of the year and this one comes complete with a television star, Taylor Schilling, of Netflix's hit series Orange is the New Black. In this film, young Miles shows an amazing intelligence from an early age and his mother Sarah (Schilling) seeks every opportunity for him to excel, only to find out that there may be more to Miles than meets the eye. I'm sure we're not getting the whole picture in the trailers for this film, and there will surely be some big twist in the second half of the film, but if horror is your genre, this one might be the best option for a while.
What Men Want
While not an official sequel, at least that I've heard, this film does come across as a "spiritual sister" to the 2000 film What Women Want starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. The premise is identical but with the gender roles flipped. This time around Taraji P. Henson plays Ali Davis, a fast rising sports marketing agent looking to make partner in her firm. When she is passed over for a man, she goes to a psychic for help and after a odd concoction of tea and a bump on the head, she wakes up able to hear the thoughts of the men around her. While she initially thinks she's been cursed, she decides to use her newfound gift to her advantage and prove to the big boys that she belongs at the table.
